Rila Monastery and St. Ivan Cave
Rila Monastery, Bulgaria
Discover Two Holy Sites in One Day: Rila Monastery & the Cave of Saint Ivan Rilski
Visit Bulgaria’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Rila Monastery, combined with a visit to the Cave of Saint Ivan Rilski, the founder of the monastery.
The Rila Monastery is a must-see day trip from Sofia. Its arcaded balconies, vivid frescoes painted by masters of the Bulgarian Revival Period, the gilded iconostasis, and the breathtaking mountain setting create an unforgettable experience. You’ll have around two hours to explore the monastery complex, visit the main church, admire the museum exhibits, and taste the famous local specialty – mekitsi with buffalo yogurt.
Next, enjoy a short 30-minute forest hike to the Cave of Saint Ivan Rilski. According to legend, only those with a pure heart can pass through its narrow tunnel. Don’t miss the holy spring nearby – its water is believed to flow eternally, never freezing even in winter.
This journey combines culture, history, spirituality, and nature into one memorable day in the Rila Mountains.
