Rila Monastery and Melnik
Melnik, Bulgaria
Day Tour to Rila Monastery & Melnik – History, Culture & Wine
This day trip combines two of Bulgaria’s most remarkable landmarks: the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery and the charming town of Melnik, famous for its wine and unique architecture.
At Rila Monastery, the largest in Bulgaria, you’ll explore its impressive complex with a professional guide. Highlights include the 14th-century Hrelyo Tower, the five-domed Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, the original 19th-century monastery kitchen, and the rich museum collection. The visit reveals the monastery’s turbulent history and outstanding artistic heritage.
Afterwards, discover Melnik – Bulgaria’s smallest town, nestled among striking sandstone pyramids. Once a thriving 17th–18th century center of the tobacco and wine trade, Melnik is now known for its traditional white houses, cobbled streets, and world-renowned wines. Here, you can enjoy a wine tasting and local culinary specialties (winery entry and degustation not included in the tour price).
The tour also includes a visit to the Kordopulova House – Melnik’s most iconic mansion, famous for its Venetian stained-glass windows, ornate murals, spacious salons, and vast wine cellar, from which Melnik’s wines once traveled to Athens, Vienna, and Rome.
This journey offers a perfect mix of Bulgarian history, culture, and gastronomy, leaving you with unforgettable impressions.
